Summary :

This huge single-level 1970’s rambler with attached garage & walkout basement has been perfectly maintained by its owners. It has a wonderful open layout, large bedrooms, plenty of informal & formal space & rests on a large lot in a quite family neighborhood. The problem was the very outdated kitchen, general bath, master suite & lack of a private master bathroom.

The long & narrow Jack-&-Jill bathroom was setup for shared access, from the hallway for guests & then within the master bedroom as a master bath. In the master bedroom, the carpeted floor between the bathroom & walk-in closet held a double sink/makeup area to compensate for the lack of a private bathroom. It was important for our clients to increase resale value, efficiency & produce designated bathrooms. Therefore, we divided the one big bathroom into two separate rooms.

Scope & Objectives :

In the new guest/general bath, the entry door off the hallway, tub/shower & linen closet stayed in their current locations. We changed the tub/shower to a deep soaker with tile surround to the ceiling, the linen doors & face frame were custom fabricated white to match the new 48” vanity & roll out drawers are inside the linen for ease of access. With the addition of the toilet in a new location, the result was a cheerful, purposeful bathroom.

To create the new master bathroom, we walled off the former open makeup area & moved the bi-fold walk-in closet door to the master bedroom side, changed it to a pocket door that is beside the new master bath door entry. The old shower plumbing essentially stayed where it was for the new neo-angle shower, but a new toilet, custom floor-to-ceiling linen cabinet, & recessed mirrored-medicine chests over the double vanity were added to create a room that is both secluded yet spacious & alluring.

Whether decision making was hard, or a some items were loved so much by the owners, remains a debate, but some finishes were duplicated in both bathrooms: the Amalia lighting fixtures, the wood cove moulding around the rooms ceiling, the plumbing fixtures, & the slate rock mountain 12×12 floor tiles & sanitary base. Amazingly, the duplication goes unnoticed because they change drastically when paired with different wood finishes, countertops, tiles & paint colors in each separate bath.

To illustrate the differences: The general bathroom tub/shower surround has Q-Stone minimal matte 12 x 24 tiles with an accent border of 1×2 crushed mood glass & glass corner shampoo shelves. The polar white vanity has a Carrera marble countertop & all accents either are brushed nickel or just for fun, as shown in the ice-glass knob on the linen cabinet doors.

Then, in the master bathroom, glass shampoo shelves reflect the moody 12×24 tile shower walls containing a decorative horizontal border of lineal stone & glass blend. The shower floor is white cut pebble rocks & the shower curb cap & corner bench are Travertine, which pull in the countertop on the rich espresso vanity. In turn, the vanity back & side splashes received the lineal stone & glass blend that tie in the shower border. Unique accent knobs in harvest sunset quartz-granite on the white custom linen cabinet echo the pebbled shower floor & all these details are easily adored through the clear glass shower door.

Fresh carpet, painted millwork, great lighting & soothing color ranges make the new General & Master Bath Suite a treasure that the owners find a joy to share!
